NLQ Question of the Week: Why is Modern Medicine Denigrated? October 29, 2015

QuestionoftheweekThis is a new series we have started running on Thursdays. Examining some of the questions involving long held Quiverfull theology and life.

We’ve all seen the Quiverfull families that refuse all modern medicine, sometimes with rather dire consequences. I’m thinking of a lady at my former church that had a very treatable form of cancer yet refused all treatments because she believed that medicine was idolatry and that God would heal her. She’s been six feet under for quite some time now, dying in horrible agony. Her husband took the insurance money from her death to buy a yellow Corvette, and marry a much younger better looking woman after the death of his wife.

This is hardly the only example I could cite. There have been over 300 cases of children being denied traditional medicine or any medical care based on religious beliefs where the child has died, many times from illnesses very easily treatable. Sometimes medical treatment is called for as a last resort, many times too late. Anyone remember the birth and death of Benaiah Chmielewski, where it was obvious that his mother Carri was having pregnancy issues that legitimate medical intervention could have possibly helped? She decided to believe in the unlicensed midwife who said her issues stemmed from the fact that she was carrying twins. She wasn’t carrying twins and that lie almost cost her life. It did cost the life of her unborn baby.

Carri once wrote on her blog:

“God never meant for man (Pregnant Women) to surrender himself (herself) to the total control of man (dr./technology, etc.) God considers that idolatry. We are to surrender ourselves to GOD.”

There have just been too many women and children dying because they will not seek medical care because their version of Quiverfull teaches it is wrong. Serious life threatening illness or manageable chronic illness? Pray and take supplements only, trust in God. Why is that? I have noticed you almost never see men dying from lack of medicine treatment in fundamentalism.
