NLQ Question of the Week: Why Are Educational Opportunities Despised?

NLQ Question of the Week: Why Are Educational Opportunities Despised? June 9, 2016

QuestionoftheweekThis is a new series we have started running on Thursdays. Examining some of the questions involving long held Quiverfull theology and life.

While reading through Ladies Against Feminism’s member Lori Alexander’s blog Always Learning it leaped out at me anew just how much people in Quiverfull and Evangelical camps really hate and denigrate any additional special educational opportunities for their children, like summer camps or special enrichment classes.

Lori’s attitude against more educational activities seems to be echoed throughout many of the people we quote here. Here’s what she said.

Since many parents can’t afford summer programs and camps, they are forced to find someone else to raise their children or leave them home alone, even with twelve year old siblings. This article bemoans the fact that lower income children get academically behind  higher income children because higher income children have schooling options during the summer. I sure never went to school during the summer. I was so excited just to play, swim, and do anything but school! Most children did this when I was growing up and it sure didn’t hurt us academically. Since when did our nation place education on such a high pedestal that children aren’t supposed to have a summer vacation? Always remember that the wisdom of this world is foolishness to God.

Why do they think that additional educational opportunities are wrong? Would you not want your children to have the most education that they can get?
