Questioning the Pearls: Are You Teaching Child Abuse?

Questioning the Pearls: Are You Teaching Child Abuse? September 11, 2016

QuestioningthePearlsFor well over a year we’ve been running a second Answering ‘Preparing To Be A Help Meet’ on Sundays, filled with questions by young ladies trying to get ready for marriage. Since we’ve run through many of the questions on their site it’s time to shift Sundays to something else, like perhaps examining the cornucopia of probably fake emails and questions that Michael and Debi Pearl of No Greater Joy post on their website and the possibly poisonous answers they give.

Original posting is here.

It’s interesting that Michael Pearl is claiming that the State of Tennessee has approved of his child beating methods. That is the most far-fetched tale he’s told yet. And what is ‘Christian Law Association’? After some Googling and Wikipedia it looks likely that it has another name or a word or two added to it because as just the CLA there’s not much out there.

“Isn’t your teaching on on spanking actually child abuse”

Our teachings are very clear as to proper use of the rod and the whole concept of proper training. Christian Law Association has gone over our materials at our request. CLA, as well as the State of Tennessee DCS, has given a clear OK that they do not contain anything that might be construed as teaching abusive use of the rod.

We wish we could guarantee that all who read our materials would understand the proper teaching, but we cannot. We have addressed the whole scope of the issue in the To Train Up A Child book — the heart of the parent towards the child, parental anger, abuse of the rod, etc. Our publications and website contain materials that fully describe what we teach.

Training is teaching the child early in life what to do and how to respond, using gentle, positive reinforcement. That is the whole scope of our ministry.
