by Erin Davis of Lies Young Women Believe – Why I Won’t Be Watching Scary Movies
Editor’s note: Should have published this one for Halloween because it’s clear that the author is speaking in the rest of the piece about resisting the evil that she thinks that holiday holds. While I’m not a horror movie fan personally is there really anything wrong spiritually with watching one of these films and getting a few good screams out? Seems to me like if this is a genre you enjoy it’s a personal choice, not embracing evil. More inventing sins again and adding to the ‘Do Nots’ of legalism.
When it comes to fear, God’s Word urges us over and over (and over) to have one response—resist!
Instead of dwelling in darkness, I want to be near Jesus, where there is light.
Since we are commanded not to fear, is it wise to watch read or listen to things that invoke fear in our hearts? No way!
Scary movies rob me of the peace that Jesus died to give me. It’s more than entertainment; it’s an opportunity to violate God’s command to fear not.
God is in the business of rescuing us from our fear. We can honor him by steering clear of themes that are dark, scary, or gory.
