Quoting Quiverfull: Movies and Television Are Sin? December 2, 2016

quotingquiverfullby Nancy Campbell from Above Rubies – Are We Degenerating?

Editor’s note: Nancy is bemoaning what she sees as a horrible slide into perversion that came first through movies. Then she shifts to television. Knowing that Nancy was raised never going to movies because she was afraid the Rapture would come and she’d be left behind is rather revealing. No ‘Flywheel’ or ‘God’s Not Dead’ for her.

What I share with you below may seem archaic. Even unbelievable in this society in which we live. However, it reveals how the bar of God’s standard continues to lower in every generation.

I grew up as a child never entering a movie theater. It was considered evil. My mother, who has since passed away, never went into a movie theater in her life. Nor did my husband’s mother! When I was older and began to go to a “good” movie, I remember saying to my mother, “Mother, you could come and see this movie. It is totally wholesome.” But she replied, “Oh no, the Lord might come while I am there!” And she wouldn’t want to be found in a movie theater if the Lord came for her!

But of course, when television came in, all standards went out the door. Now, many Christians receive into their homes all the filth and rubbish of the world. They watch adultery and fornication, and worse, without batting an eye! Many Christians go off to every new movie that comes without any discretion! No wonder we don’t see the power of God moving in our midst today. We are a lukewarm people–overcome with mediocrity, complacency, ordinariness, passivity, and middle-of-the-road blindness!

Okay, Nancy. Let’s start editing out all the unacceptable stories. (I’m going to start with the Bible): I supposed we have to shield everyone from the story of the gospels because there are simply too many crazy people, demon possessed types, lepers, adulterers, murderers, thieves, prostitutes, and even tax collectors.

Next we have to stop talking about Moses, because he murdered someone. David is out, as is Solomon. Paul was in prison, obviously a story about a felon is not admirable. Ruth was a hussy, throwing herself at Boaz like that, not to mention Esther! Abraham was a liar as was Jacob. So they are not wholesome either.

By golly, we cannot even read the story of creation because Adam and Eve were naked and immodest. Where does one find wholesome stories?

Wait. How exactly is the world degenerating again?

Nancy-to-English Translation: If you’re not a total CPM fanatic who never lifts your head out of the Rightwing Media Bubble, you’re not a True Christian™.

I think part of the fundgelical problem with popular media is that it leads to using your imagination. Using your imagination leads to playing around with ideas. Playing around with ideas can lead to realizing that it’s possible to have different beliefs. This can lead to analyzing CPM theology, and realizing how irrational, unfair, and just plain mean-spirited their version of Biblegod is… which results in rejecting the belief system.

Mind you, it could just be that Nancy is afraid of viewers developing empathy for people outside the cult, and realizing that freely-consensual sex isn’t that worst of all possible sins.

Samson had sex outside of marriage with Delilah (I don’t have any issue with consensual sex in any kind of relationship, barring adultery, but Nancy & co. do). David committed adultery with Bathsheba and killed her husband. Lot gave his daughters to rapists.

Yep, much more wholesome than TV.

To quote Gaston from ‘Beauty and the Beast’ “It’s not right for a woman to read. Soon she starts getting *ideas*, and *thinking*…”

    Sums up QF/fundie/etc. ideology perfectly.
