What Isis Really Wants

Graeme Wood wrote this important long form piece for The Atlantic in March. With the renewed focus on Isis in light of the Paris attacks, we need to understand who they are and what they want to accomplish. “The Islamic State is no mere collection of psychopaths. It is a religious group with carefully considered beliefs, among them that it is a key agent of the coming apocalypse. Here’s what that means for its strategy—and for how to stop it.”

On Being Matt Chandler’s Roommate
Every person struggles with the comparison trap and pastors are no different. Steve Bezner writes at For the Church about being his temptation to compare himself with the ministry success of his college friend and roommate Matt Chandler. His struggle summarizes how we all can fight this battle. “This is a story about two young men who were friends, roommates, and pastors. In other words, this is a story about jealousy.”

Stressed, Tired, Rushed: A Portrait of the Modern Family
Living in the suburbs I see a pace of life quite different from the one with which I grew up. Claire Cain Miller shows this phenomenon characterizes our entire culture in The New York Times. “Children are much more likely than not to grow up in a household in which their parents work, and in nearly half of all two-parent families today, both parents work full time, a sharp increase from previous decades.”

Love Into Light: The Gospel, the Homosexual, and the Church
With the discussions taking place concerning sexuality and the church, I have read several books on this issue in the last several years. Peter Hubbard’s Love Into Light best combines biblical faithfulness with an understanding of how the church can best help those who struggle with same-sex attraction. Today it is only .99 on Kindle and it will be well worth your time.
