Since 1971, The Witches’ Almanac has been the source of fun, wisdom, trivia, and magical lore for hundreds of thousands of readers throughout the world. Modeled after the Old Farmers’ Almanac, it includes information related to the annual Moon Calendar (weather forecasts and horoscopes), as well as legends, rituals, herbal secrets, interviews, mystic incantations, interviews, and many a curious tale of good and evil. Although it is an annual publication, only about 15 percent of the content is specific to the date range of each issue…
In October, I received a copy of The Witches’ Almanac to review. I shared it with an interested friend who, like me, has a child in the home and an interest in incorporating more every day spirituality into their lives. My friend’s review of the book follows. Enjoy!

As one might expect from a book with the word “Almanac” in the title, the 2014 Witches’ Almanac is brimming with interesting bits of lore, and helpful hints-both mundane and magickal. This year’s theme, Mystical Earth, brings us creation stories, superstitions, customs, and ancient Earth magick practices. Like any almanac, not everything in this book will be of interest to every person reading it, however, from Hedgerow witchery to modern meditation, a quick flip through the book will find much to enlighten or entertain. The Night-Time Mind of the Witch, is a eye-opening piece—especially for those of us with insomnia, and Moon Gardening takes gardening by the phases of the moon into a natural, intuitive practice.
Expecting to see the calendar in the standard Gregorian format, I was happily surprised to see the calendar according to the Zodiac! The astrological education and information provided in the Witches’ Almanac is simply fantastic. I have spent decades shying away from astrological study due to the incredible complexity in which it is presented. Not so in the Witches’ Almanac—I actually understand it! What is more, I actually feel as though I can use the information. The Presage gives astrological and planetary keys and correspondences, in a quick and easy format, for magickal and ritual use; along with the meaning of the Houses, the influence of retrograde cycles, and so much more. I feel like I have been taught a new language in a few short pages. With so much information easily at hand, my rituals and magickal practice will be greatly enhanced.
