Dark Rites on a marble slab, it has all the makings of a good book!
If my choice of title drew you in ‘hook, line and sinker’, excited you and raised your interest then I apologize for getting your hopes up. But you have read too much Dennis Wheatley and watched too many films, frankly might I suggest it is time you actually embraced reality, for the truth is far less dramatic.
Yes the Pagan scene of ritual could if one was lucky enough, use an altar of marble, and upon said slab could be enacted the Great Rite; I assure you such a luxury would thrill most of us, however it is extremely unlikely. For most witches ritual is simply our way of creating sacred space and then being in communion with the Goddess and communicating one’s intent, an altar is lovely but not essential, company is also a pleasure but again not necessary.
But I speak as a simple solitary witch who follows the ancient Goddess Way not as a Neo-Pagan or Wiccan, following an eclectic revision of ancient beliefs; generally they adhere to more formally structured ritual where harmony of gender through balance and equality of partnership is seen as the essence of celebrating being human. Within this setting the act of union, whether symbolically enacted with athame and chalice or enacted through physical sex in the Great rite, becomes the demonstrative declaration and fulfillment of Pagan belief, the celebration of the gift of creation.
As a solitary most of my rituals take place in the forest within a wooded grove, beneath the moon and stars, with only the foxes, owls and badgers as my witness. My heavy cloak is wrapped about me, my long loose robe of fine Celtic blue wool envelopes my naked flesh; yet still for most of the year I ache with cold, needing to draw as close to the fire as is humanly possible. Outdoor sky clad rituals are the romantic notion of dreamers, certainly here within the British Isles it can seldom happen as our weather simply does not allow for such glorious indulgence, most British Pagans only embrace nudity indoor with the blessing of central heating.
The solitary practitioner, within the safety of sacred space , uses their mind through trace, to go journeying, leaving this mundane world to visit the spirit world. There in this altered state one can visit loved ones, be taught, healed, comforted and yes also on occasions fulfilled through ecstatic union with spirit consorts.
Speaking purely from personal experience I find that by being outdoors I never use an altar, I have the earth and all Her gifts. On the rare occasion when the summer evening is mild there is nothing more wonderful than to lay naked upon meadow grass and feel oneness with creation, or to paddle naked in the crystal clear tumbling stream, so cold it makes one ache, then drawing upon ones inner Amazon, let the deeper waters consume, and for a few orgasmic minutes be one with the river as it flows to the sea. On such moments I feel I am Goddess, one with all creation, knowing total union and harmony, this is my spiritual fulfillment and celebration of my Pagan beliefs.
Blessings,
Eve
