Witchcraft: A Silly Religion?

Witchcraft: A Silly Religion? May 4, 2010

We all try to make our headlines pop. Make them more interesting than the next guys. However, this article in the Guardian has me livid.

Tanya Gold gives her opinion on Witchcraft after stating a series of absurdities without context:

“But still I feel an urge to defend the witches. Of all the silly religions – and I think that all religions are silly – I believe that witchcraft is the least dangerous and the most benign. It is also the least understood.”

Well, gee, I feel all warm and fuzzy. Nothing like a backhanded compliment to make my day. If someone wrote an article stating Mormons were a polygamist cult but they liked them anyway there would be an uproar. Her editor would not have allowed her to publish a similar article on any other religion.

I’m more upset with her article than I am with the census. My religion is not silly. Not to me. If Tanya Gold thinks all religions are ridiculous then perhaps she shouldn’t write about them, in the same way I don’t write about Paris Hilton.

Will we ever reach a point where our religions aren’t ridiculed on a slow news day? By Jove, I certainly hope so!
