We’re less than a month away from a new calendar year. I’ve been thinking a lot lately about my vision for the Pagan portal here at Patheos: how it was, how it changed, and what it needs to be. In a way, 2011 has been a grand experiment, not just here, but all across Pagan media. Our media landscape is changing. There are new expectations, new projects and new understanding of what the needs of both our media and our... Read more

I’ve got a lot to say about the Halloran story at The Village Voice. I’ve got a lot to say about a lot of different stories, topics and issues. But I woke up this morning to find the mountains blanketed with snow and my heart hot with anger. No good can come out of my writing today. I need to sit with my mountains, dusted with powdered sugar like giant lumps of french toast. So I’m taking a snow day.... Read more

Before Halloween, the decorations were already in the stores. I thought it was early, but I bought a rosemary Yule tree and a nice secular Happy Holidays sign in the shape of a five-pointed star. Yet here we are at the end of November and we’ve already had over a month of Christmas consumerism. I’m done. I’m over it. Already. I don’t celebrate this holiday and I’m tired of being bombarded with it. I’m not buying anyone anything. I’m not... Read more

You gotta love mercury retrograde. Weird crap just happens. Really funny things happen. I’m tickled. Here’s why… See, it all started with Cara Schulz. She’s spent probably about 6 months working on the 2-part Air Force story she published recently. You should read it here and here. It’s really good. She spent countless hours trying to get people to talk to her, to get people to go on the record and to pull this thing together. When you’re independent media,... Read more

Keeping silent. It’s something that Witches do a lot. What happens at the crossroads, stays at the crossroads. You don’t broadcast all your business for others to pick apart the threads of energy you have so carefully woven. Three can keep a secret, if two of them are dead. – Benjamin Franklin Much of the work we do takes place silently. The words we say are but a small part of the communication that takes place in our work. Silent... Read more

Today I have too much to say, and too much on my mind to get any one thing “down on paper.” However, last night I did watch Four Rooms and the scene with the Witches was hilarious. Here’s a tiny clip of the first Witch arriving. Doesn’t she look familiar? Read more

For many years now I have ignored Black Friday in favor of Buy Nothing Day, which I look forward to every year. Today I won’t even buy a stick of gum, much less go on a shopping bonanza. Part of being thankful means appreciating what you have. So I will spend my day relaxing at home, appreciating what I have and avoiding the holiday stress. I’ll turn off the phone, shut off e-mail and just chill. Instead of participating in... Read more

Long before the sun is up, my turkey is in the oven. It’s a small turkey but in terms of intimidation it’s ginormous. Still, I’m grateful to have it. Grateful to be able to cook a meal for my family. I have a lot to be thankful for, and I’m so glad to be able to celebrate that. Yet I live where the trail of tears began. Thar’s gold in these here hills, and it’s caused a lot of heartbreak.... Read more

I am completely overwhelmed with what I need to do for tomorrow. Turkey is thawed in the fridge, I’m trying to figure out if I have enough serving dishes and figure out the whole chair situation. I’m sure many of you are doing the same thing. Do I have enough sage? Will there be traffic? Is someone in the family going to take issue with me this year? Do I need to de-Pagan myself, my house, my kids before having... Read more

Samhain is past. It’s a new year. I chopped off my hair and I’m sporting a pixie cut. So as we are in the process of upgrading all the blogs on Patheos, I decided to pull off a makeover here as well. I like it. Very celestial. An homage to my old patroness: Artemis. It feels light, open and free. It’s nice. New can be nice. Change can be nice. I’m cooking a Thanksgiving meal for my sister’s family this... Read more
