Our family went to see “The Guardians” movie on a sneak peak the other night. It was brilliant. he whole movie is about the toxic nature of fear. Fear is deadly and so simple to counteract – simply don’t give it any oxygen. This week I have been returning to this hilarious clip of Eric Berry freaking out on the sidelines because there is a live horse walking around. I’ve watched this thing a dozen times and it never gets... Read more

I’m absolutely shocked by this decision out of the U.K. – the Church of England has rejected a measure that would finally allow women to serve in the role of bishop within the Anglican church. Interestingly the Bishops themselves were overwhelmingly in favor of it. The House of Bishops voted 44 in favor, three against. The House of the Clergy also ratified the measure, 148 in favor with 45 against. It was the house of the laity (stacked with a... Read more

It’s morning in the U.S., so the vote may be over. Any moment now I hope to see news from England that the Anglican Church has voted to ordain women as bishops. It would be an historic moment for the church and would provide a much needed moment of agreement in a church that has been tortured by division over the past decade. Tony Campolo makes the case in a simple and concise way at Red Letter Christians: The vote... Read more

I confess that I struggle to be present where I am, in the moment. I spend too much time thinking about other things – reprocessing past events, or dreaming about future ones – and have trouble just being totally present to what I am doing at any given time. I confess that I think a person can literally fail to live their own life because they are so busy living in the past or in the future. I confess that... Read more

For years I’ve heard the whispers about what happened between Andy Stanley, one of the most famous and influential pastors and leaders, and his father Charles Stanley, equally famous and possibly even more influential. These two famously large preaching personalities had parted ways years back amid a divorce between Charles and his wife, Andy’s mom. Some say that Charles had an affair that broke up his marriage and never even missed a day in the pulpit through the whole thing.... Read more

It’s Saturday & K-State is my school, so today is a big day. There’s a lot to root for in Manhattan this year. Collin Klein is this nice Christian kid who is actually managed to not be creepy or obnoxious about his faith – not always easy to do in the spotlight of a Heisman race and a national championship. Snyder has built a program that is squeaky clean and they are headed to Baylor to keep the national championship... Read more

So the “Big Rich Texas” clip opens with the line, “I am going to show you how to make an adult baptism stylish,” so you just know it’s going to be hilarious. The first thing you gotta ask yourself is, “Why am I listening to this woman teach me how to properly baptize someone?” A questions immediately followed by another, more existential question: “Do we really want to make a baptism stylish?” You can dismiss that as silliness, but the... Read more

I have known next to nothing about Mormons. Growing up as an evangelical Christian I was taught that Mormonism was a cult. A few youth group friends got into studying how to evangelize Mormons. They learned its history, and honed rhetorical strategies on the off chance they’d get to witness to a Mormon. I thought it was a waste of time. I had read the brochure – Mormons didn’t believe in the Trinity, black people were not acceptable to God,... Read more

Reuters reported Monday that political watchdog and secularist groups are asking for an investigation into the political involvement of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association during the 2012 election. Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics filed a complaint with the IRS asking them to review tax exempt status for the BGEA. Franklin has taken a lot of heat for involving his father’s organization in the campaign to elect Mitt Romney, a practicing Mormon – here’s an article with several links. Franklin spoke... Read more

Nate Silver has gotten a lot of press for his near perfect election night predictions. In 2008 Silver gained popularity and influence after he called 49 out of 50 states. Many pundits were predicting that Silver would crash and burn in 2012. Instead, he outperformed his 2008 predictions and now that Florida has been called for president Obama, Silver can tout a perfect record 50 out of 50 states called correctly. How did Silver do it? Only Likely Voters Matter:... Read more
