Our nation is sliding toward the Handmaid’s Tale set. U.S. Supreme Court justice nominee Amy Coney Barrett’s confirmation hearings began today. The Moral Majority’s more than 40 years of planning and plotting have culminated in this surreal moment in history — we’re inching toward theocracy. Moral Majority Minions Moral Majority alums and their slightly less urbane descendants, Tea Partiers and Trump supporters, have nearly realized a uniquely American dream — -turning back the clock 50 years. Conservative evangelical Christians are convulsing in praise over dealing... Read more

Clarence Thomas getting lion’s share of criticism for marriage equality dig People gathered at picturesque venues for beautiful weddings was a given. Dick and Jane or Adam and Steve must downsize ceremonies or go virtual. But, Adam and Steve or Lindsey and Yolanda could lose the right to marry. Marriage equality faces a veiled threat from U.S. Supreme Court Justices Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas. Threat to religious liberty Alito and Clarence Thomas dropped a judicial bombshell this week. While... Read more

Chadwick Boseman didn’t just make movies…he taught life lessons Classrooms aren’t the only places we learn important lessons. That reality doesn’t, of course, minimize institutional education’s value. But, the fact that experience and observation can be good teachers remains. Experiencing and observing Chadwick Boseman was a masterclass in courage, determination, and heroism. Embodying Black Liberation In death, Boseman has become iconic for playing icons and embodying pure Black liberation. This Black gay social justice warrior must confess publicly struggling with Black Panther.... Read more

Mangling Constitutional Amendment Meanings Won’t Stop Sen. Harris Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA)’s selection as former Vice President Joe Biden’s running mate has launched us into some Back To The Future/1984 alternate universe. Birtherism has been resurrected like a beloved soap opera character. (Shout out to Reva Shayne!) Taking a page from an old playbook Questioning former President Barack Obama’s U.S. Citizenship conceived the Birther movement and gave President Donald Trump the political capital to, eventually, snag the White House. Chapman University law professor and Claremont... Read more

George Floyd — and many other Black people — should be alive today More than 2,000 years ago, loved ones watched helplessly as the State murdered an innocent Black man…slowly. His death took hours not less than nine minutes. Nails pierced his hands and his feet. Society was convinced he was a threat. So, Jesus had to die. His loved ones stood beneath his cross and cried out. Mourning In Public Today, the loved ones of one Black person after another cry out in front... Read more

Black People Dangerous Until Rendered Docile Being Black in America has never been for the faint of heart. White supremacists have dehumanized and demoralized Black bodies for centuries. Denying their humanity made exploiting and destroying them by any means necessary easier. Doing so shielded them from guilt for transforming them into strange fruit. “Southern trees bear strange fruit Blood on the leaves and blood at the root Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze, Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees.”... Read more

White privilege means never hearing, ‘you can’t do that.’ Losing privilege makes certain White people lose their sanity. Small throngs of Tea Party-infused Deplorables gathered for political rallies to protest stay-at-home orders. The height of their hypocrisy and stupidity is breathtaking. President Donald J. Trump is co-signing that hypocrisy and stupidity according to a story in The Hill today. “LIBERATE MINNESOTA!” Trump tweeted, followed quickly by a call to “LIBERATE MICHIGAN!” “LIBERATE VIRGINIA, and save your great 2nd Amendment. It is under... Read more

COVID-19 Make Virtual Platforms Lifelines Community and connection are key. That’s among the litany of lessons COVID-19 has taught us already. However, those of us helping to flatten the curve accepted new ways of maintaining community and connection. Children and grandchildren, who can’t stand outside Pop Pop’s nursing home window, must FaceTime him. A great-grandma sits in her lounge chair, while great-grandchildren shout, “We love you!” through her iPad speaker — courtesy of Google Hangout. Virtual platforms — once meant only to begin relationships — are... Read more

Dreams always look and feel different when they become reality. Countless unknowns wait — and have waited — tables, waiting for their Hollywood dreams to come true. Images flying through their minds while heading to Table 2 with a medium rare steak are completely different from the altered reality many former unknowns live today. Dreams and reality never completely add up. Despite not being a wannabe Oscar winner, the differences between my dream and reality confronted me. God called this then-Black queer boy to... Read more

Intentional steps never really guide someone’s faith or spiritual journey. Of course, like me, one can convince themselves that walking in Jesus’ footsteps was all their idea. Divine guidance and intervention can only be credited for giving this Protestant an appreciation for the Catholic perspective. Seeing myself only as one of Jesus’ followers gave me the spiritual clarity to do so. While some boundaries are necessary, this United Church of Christ social justice minister questions the value of denominational boundaries.... Read more
