Statuary Rape? A Pennsylvania teenager faces two years in prison after simulating oral sex with a statue of Jesus.
The 14-year-old boy has been charged with desecration of a venerated object, a misdemeanor under Pennsylvania law, according to The Smoking Gun.
The teen was arrested after posting photos to his Facebook account of himself simulating oral sex with the statue of Jesus.
One of the photos posted to the teenager’s Facebook page shows him with his crotch in the face of the kneeling statue.
Friendly Atheist reports:
The teenager’s juvenile court charge, formally titled “desecration, theft or sale of a venerated object,” is a second-degree misdemeanor in the Pennsylvania Code. The law defines desecration as “defacing, damaging, polluting or otherwise physically mistreating in a way that the actor knows will outrage the sensibilities” of people who learn of the action.
The teenager was not identified by the authorities. His case will be handled in juvenile court.
The kid was being silly and obnoxious, which is just about right for a 14-year-old. Threatening the teen with two years in prison for offending “the sensibilities” of a few uptight citizens makes no sense, and smacks of the kind of blasphemy laws one might find in a despotic theocracy, but not the USA.
Mediaite reports the teen recently showed up at the church to apologize. And according to the Daily Mail, the church itself didn’t want the kid arrested. “Our request was for prayer for the young man,” a spokesperson said. However, Bedford County District Attorney Bill Higgins will be pursuing the controversial case, apparently as a political stunt to please his conservative base and annoy liberals. Thursday on his Facebook page Higgins said:
“I guess I should take solace in the fact that the liberals are mad at me – again. As for this case, this troubled young man offended the sensibilities and morals of OUR community. … His actions constitute a violation of the law, and he will be prosecuted accordingly. If that tends to upset the ‘anti-Christian, ban-school-prayer, war-on-Christmas, oppose display of Ten Commandments’ crowd, I make no apologies.”
The irony is that District Attorney Higgins has been posting audio clips of pornographic acts to his own Twitter feed. The blatant hypocrisy is typical of those who claim to promote Christian values.
