Fox News claims Disney is persecuting Christians

Fox News claims Disney is persecuting Christians December 3, 2014

Faux News: After a mother in North Carolina claimed the Disney Channel’s website had banned the word “God,” Fox News went into overdrive, promoting their beloved yet false narrative that Christians are being persecuted in the U.S.

Feeding the ignorant paranoia of their right wing Christian base, Fox News erroneously reported earlier this week that Disney is persecuting Christians by not allowing the faithful to give thanks to God on the Disney website.

Todd Starnes, a leading culture warrior for Fox News, ran with the story under the provocative headline: “Why did Disney block God?”

According to Starnes’ story, over the Thanksgiving Holiday the Disney website asked people to list what they were thankful for. One young girl attempted to write that she was thankful for “God, my family, my church and my friends,” only to have her message rejected because a profanity filter blocked the word “god.”

The sanctimonious Starnes chided Disney, proclaiming:

“It sounds to me like the folks over at the Disney Channel have gone looney tunes.”

Fox and Friends also ran with Starnes’ story, promoting the Christian persecution myth on their ongoing “Fight For Faith” series. On-air personality Elisabeth Hasselbeck introduced the segment by making the overly dramatic and ominous claim:

“Well, it looks like Disney’s frozen out God.”

No doubt deluded geriatrics and other misguided Fox News aficionados squirmed with shallow yet righteous indignation at the thought that their beloved Disney had been infiltrated by evil, godless liberals, intent on preventing a sweet young girl from offering thanks to her god.

The only problem: it seems that nobody over at Fox bothered to check the story out with Disney before promoting their false narrative of Christian persecution.

As any reasonable person might expect, Disney has no interest in persecuting Christians or anyone else with money to spend on their products.

On Tuesday, December 2, Disney issued the following statement:

Disney employs word filtering technology to prevent profanity from appearing on our websites.  Unfortunately, because so many people attempt to abuse the system and use the word “God” in conjunction with profanity, in an abundance of caution our system is forced to catch and prevent any use of the word on our websites.  The company would have been happy to explain our filtering technology to the inquiring family had they contacted us.

Disney is not persecuting Christians. There is no war on religion, and there is no Christian persecution in the U.S. However, Christian extremists are waging a war on the U.S. Constitution and the secular values upon which this nation was founded, and Fox News is leading the charge.
