Lawmaker claims brutal attack on pregnant woman was ‘God’s punishment’

Lawmaker claims brutal attack on pregnant woman was ‘God’s punishment’ March 25, 2015

A Colorado lawmaker claims the brutal attack on a pregnant woman whose unborn baby was cut from her womb by a stranger with a kitchen knife was a result of God’s punishment for allowing women safe and legal access to abortion.

Last week, a pregnant woman in Colorado was attacked by a stranger who stabbed her in the stomach and cut her baby out of her womb in a most heinous act of violence. While the victim survived the deranged attack, the fetus did not.

Former Navy chaplain and Colorado state legislator Gordon Klingenschmitt discussed the case Wednesday on his “Pray In Jesus Name” program, appropriating the poor woman’s tragedy to advance his own perverse religious agenda.

Right Wing Watch reports Klingenschmitt said the attack was a sign from God that the nation has lost its way:

This is the curse of God upon America for our sin of not protecting innocent children in the womb and part of that curse for our rebellion against God as a nation is that our pregnant women are ripped open.

The claim is an outrageous non sequitur, yet this is not the first time Klingenschmitt has made outrageous remarks in support of his Christian extremism.

Previously the Republican lawmaker told his constituents “to look to the Lord” for healthcare, claiming that God will protect people from disease so long as they obey God’s commands.

Klingenschmitt has also argued transgender people should be prohibited from using public bathrooms and that atheists should face mandatory exorcism in order to feel more comfortable in church.
