An angry mob of Muslims surround a mentally ill woman who allegedly burned a copy of the Koran, attacking her with sticks and stones before setting her body ablaze in Kabul, the capital city of Afghanistan.
According to reports a mob of angry Muslims cheered while others punched, kicked and stoned the mentally ill woman before setting her body on fire and throwing it into a muddy river in the heart of Kabul, all for allegedly burning pages of Islam’s holy book.
Shocking video has emerged of men hurling bricks and repeatedly stomping on the unfortunate victim while shouts of “Allahu Akbar” (god is great) echo through the bloodthirsty mob as the woman is savagely beaten to death.
Farid Afzal, head of investigations for Kabul police, said the parents of the 32-year-old victim who died in the attack told authorities their daughter’s name was Farkhunda and that she suffered from mental illness.
Police and witnesses said the incident took place near the Shah-e Doh Shamshira shrine on March 19. One eyewitness told Radio Free Afghanistan:
We were watching this incident. She burned the Koran. A lot of people gathered around the spot. They burned her.
Another eyewitness described the scene to the BBC:
I heard noise, I went and people said that a woman is burning Koran. When I went closer I saw angry people shouting they want to kill the woman.
They beat her to death and then threw her on the river side and burned her. Firefighters later came and put out the fire and took the body.
So far, four suspects have been arrested in the gruesome crime. Human rights groups have raised concerns whether enough was done to stop the mob.
