The Islamic State has released over 200 abused Yazidis, many of whom were held as sex slaves, including a pregnant 9-year old girl.
Earlier this week, more than 200 Yazidi women, children and elderly were released near Kirkuk, in Northern Iraq, after being taken by Islamic State militants last June.
Many of the females were held as sex slaves, awarded to Islamic State fighters in accord with sharia law as interpreted by the Islamic State.
One such victim is a nine-year-old girl who is now pregnant after suffering horrific sexual abuse at the hands of Islamic State militants.
Yousif Daoud, a Canada-based aid worker who has just returned from the region, said the girl was “mentally and physically traumatised” after the abuse she had suffered, and there are fears she may yet not survive her ordeal.
“This girl is so young she could die if she delivers a baby,” he said. “Even a caesarian section is dangerous.”
When she was found the girl “was in very bad shape”, Daoud said. “She was sexually abused by no fewer than 10 men. Most of them were front-line fighters or suicide bombers who are given girls as a reward.”
Previously, the Islamic State issued a detailed and horrific guide to the capture, punishment, and rape of non-Muslim females, in accord with sharia (Islamic law). The guidelines state:
“It is permissible to buy, sell, or give as a gift female captives and slaves, for they are merely property, which can be disposed of.”
Perhaps most shocking, the Islamic State guidelines legitimizes the rape of children, stating:
“It is permissible to have intercourse with the female slave who hasn’t reached puberty if she is fit for intercourse; however if she is not fit for intercourse, then it is enough to enjoy her without intercourse.”
Last August the Islamic State launched an assault on Iraq’s Yazidi community, kidnapping hundreds of Yazidi women. A report by the U.S. State Department said at the time that 1,500 to 4,000 women had been abducted and that they were being raped, forced into marriage, sold into slavery and tortured.
