A Michigan pastor known for his rants against the LGBT community has resigned after being outed as a member of the gay dating and hook-up site Grindr.
Reverend Matthew Makela has resigned as pastor of St. John’s Lutheran Church and School in Midland, Michigan after being exposed as another religious hypocrite.
Queerty was first to report on the moral hypocrisy of Rev. Makela, a married father of five, noting Makela “his position of authority and respect in his community to broadcast his self-loathing view on same-sex attraction.”
Raw Story reports that Makela has a record of disparaging members of the LGBT community via social media, decrying gay marriage and stating that the “transgender movement is going to assist opportunistic sickos in preying upon children and others.”
Commenting on an anti-gay article, Reverend Makela once wrote:
I love people who have same sex attraction, and so does God. The proof is in the sacrifice He made for all of us.
We don’t tell a person born with tendencies to abuse alcohol to keep on giving in to his innate desires because he can’t help it. We try to help him in his struggle.
However, according to Queerty, Reverend Makela sent messages on Grindr like: “I love to make out naked” and “I would love to mess around with a bicurious guy,” while indicating he was “a top” and “loved to cuddle.”In an email exchange with Queerty, Makela confirmed that he had an active profile on Grindr, that he had “resigned” from his position at the church after the story surfaced, and that his wife and senior pastor had been made aware of his extracurricular activities
Queerty explains why they exposed the Christian hypocrite:
If Makela made even one LGBT kid at St. John’s “Christ-based” elementary school, their parents, friends, family or anyone who ever stepped foot in the church feel like being true to yourself is shameful (and it seems all too likely that he did), then we’re glad to share his hypocrisy with the world.
Indeed, the sexual proclivities of individuals are not normally newsworthy. However, when a politician or a religious leader is making a living publicly opposing what they are secretly doing in private, they deserve to be exposed and shamed for their hypocrisy.
