Abstinence spokesperson and traditional family values advocate Bristol Palin is pregnant.
Bristol Palin, the 24 year old daughter of former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, made her surprise announcement on her blog earlier today. In a post titled “Big News” Palin writes:
I wanted you guys to be the first to know that I am pregnant.
However, rather than joy, Palin’s announcement is filled with a somber sadness. Palin writes:
Honestly, I’ve been trying my hardest to keep my chin up on this one.
At the end of the day there’s nothing I can’t do with God by my side, and I know I am fully capable of handling anything that is put in front of me with dignity and grace.
Life moves on no matter what. So no matter how you feel, you get up, get dressed, show up, and never give up.
When life gets tough, there is no other option but to get tougher.
I know this has been, and will be, a huge disappointment to my family, to my close friends, and to many of you.
On one level, Palin’s post is heartbreaking. One would hope announcing a pregnancy would be a joyous occasion, and not an occasion on which friends and family would be “disappointed.”
Palin probably anticipates that others will be disappointed with her pregnancy because she has promoted herself as an advocate of abstinence-only sex education, and her current state of affairs clearly demonstrates that she failed to practice what she preached.
Previously Palin took an abstinence pledge promising not to have sex again (she was already a mother at the time) until she got married. More important, she also used her celebrity to encourage other young people to take the same pledge.
In 2010, a 19-year-old Palin told In Touch magazine:
Palin first became pregnant while still a high school student, and she now has a son Trigg. However, her own experience as an unwed teen mother did not stop her from becoming a high paid and vocal advocate for abstinence-only sex education.
I’m not going to have sex until I’m married. I can guarantee it.
After the birth of her son Tripp and her mother’s meteoric political rise, Palin became a high paid speaker at conservative Christian functions aimed at young people, telling teenagers that they should practice abstinence rather than safe sex to avoid becoming pregnant.
Earlier this year, Palin announced that she was engaged to former Marine and Medal of Honor Recipient Dakota Meyer. However, the wedding was called off last month. Radar Online is currently reporting that Meyer is the father of Palin’s baby-to-be.
In her”Big News” blog post Palin writes:
I do not want any lectures and I do not want any sympathy.
However, Palin deserves both.
Palin deserves a lecture on hypocrisy, on the power of celebrity, and the failure of abstinence-only sex education.
But Palin also deserves our sympathy. Nobody should be worried about disappointing friends and family by announcing a pregnancy. The fact that Palin anticipates such disappointment reflects the poverty and emptiness of those traditional family values conservative Christians are always talking about.
