Pop star Miley Cyrus rejects the immoral politics of Christian fundamentalists and compares believing the Biblical account of Noah’s Ark to believing in Santa Claus or the Tooth Fairy.
In a wide ranging, NSFW interview with Paper magazine, Cyrus discusses her own bisexuality and gender fluid status, as well as the important work she is doing to help homeless LGBT youth.
Cyrus recently started the Happy Hippie Foundation, a philanthropic venture designed to raise funds and awareness for homeless and LGBT youth, after being moved by the tragic tale of Leelah Alcorn, a transgender victim of conservative Christian values.
In the interview Cyrus rails against anti-gay conservative Christians, and claims Christian fundamentalists should not be making laws for the rest of us. From the article:
Cyrus is right to reject conservative Christian values and Old Testament fairy tales. And the good work she does at her Happy Hippie foundation “to fight injustice facing homeless youth, LGBT youth and other vulnerable populations” looks a lot like humanism.
Cyrus maintains a particular contempt for fundamentalist lawmakers who rally against this sort of progressive, potentially life-saving change. “Those people [shouldn’t] get to make our laws,” she says. Those people — the ones who believe that, say, Noah’s Ark was a real seafaring vessel. “That’s fucking insane,” she says. “We’ve outgrown that fairy tale, like we’ve outgrown fucking Santa and the tooth fairy.”
Well played Miley Cyrus.
