Bill Nye “The Science Guy” explains why being gay is both perfectly natural, and a natural part of the evolutionary process.
In a new video for Big Think, popular science explainer Bill Nye explains why homosexuality makes sense from an evolutionary and a genetic standpoint.
An anonymous viewer asks Bill about same-sex attraction, and how it fits into an account of biological evolution:
Nye responds by explaining that homosexuality exists across species and throughout nature. Nye also makes the important point that sexuality exists along a spectrum with degrees of heterosexuality and homosexuality.
I have a question about homosexuality. If the purpose of a species is to reproduce and survive, how would it make sense evolutionarily for humans to have same-sex preferences? Are humans the only ones who practice homosexuality? And if so does this mean that homosexuality is a product of human’s personal whim as opposed to instinct?
In concluding, Nye advises everyone to relax and celebrate life, because being gay is natural.
