Promises of theocracy: Throwing red meat to anti-choice, Christian extremists, Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee declared if elected he would not rule out using federal troops and the FBI to stop otherwise legal abortions.
The Topeka Capital-Journal reports that while campaigning in Iowa on Friday, and discussing the issue of abortion, Huckabee said he would “invoke the 5th and 14th amendments for the protection of every human being,” before going on to proclaim:
I will not pretend there is nothing we can do to stop this (abortion).
When asked by a reporter if he meant that stopping abortion would mean using federal troops or the FBI, Huckabee said:
We’ll see if I get to be president.
All American citizens should be protected.
Huckabee went on to justify his intention to defy Roe v. Wade — the Supreme Court’s landmark ruling on abortion that guarantees a woman’s right to choose — by citing Abraham Lincoln’s defiance of the infamous Dred Scott decision, which denied African-Americans the right to citizenship, in his emancipation proclamation.
Drawing a false equivalence between abortion and slavery is a favorite tactic of those who oppose abortion and lack critical thinking skills.
Huckabee made his dangerous and incendiary remarks concerning abortion in the wake of a highly orchestrated and dishonest campaign to smear and discredit Planned Parenthood.
Last week, in another outrageous statement, Huckabee said President Obama’s Iran deal would “take the Israelis and march them to the door of the oven.”
Currently Huckabee is desperately seeking attention to raise his polling numbers so as to qualify for one of 10 spots in a prime-time Fox News debate scheduled next week at Cleveland’s Quicken Loans Arena.
