The gunman who shot and killed four Marines Thursday during two attacks at military facilities in Chattanooga, Tennessee, has been identified as Mohammad Youssuf Abdulazeez.
Earlier today the FBI confirmed the identity of the shooter as 24-year-old Mohammad Youssuf Abdulazeez, a naturalized citizen from Kuwait and a devout Muslim who would miss wresting practice to pray while a student.
Abdulazeez is suspected of killing four U.S. Marines on Thursday. Reports indicate the gunman opened fire at two military offices in Chattanooga before being fatally shot in an attack officials called a brazen, brutal act of domestic terrorism.
In a prescient high school yearbook entry, the Chattanooga gunman declared:
My name causes national security alerts. What does yours do?
The Telegraph reports the suspected shooter is pictured in his local high school yearbook with the quote “My name causes national security alerts. What does yours do?”
Classmates told a local newspaper that the entry is for the same Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeez suspected of carrying out the terror attack.
Abdulazeez, 24, attacked two military facilities with an arsenal of weapons before dying in a shootout.
He was born in Kuwait but lived near Chattanooga, and was a naturalised American who had graduated with an engineering degree.
Bill Killian, the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Tennessee, said:
We are treating this as an act of domestic terrorism. While it would be premature to speculate on the motives of the shooter at this time, we will conduct a thorough investigation of this tragedy and provide updates as they are available.
Some Islamic leaders claim the Holy month of Ramadan is the best time to carry out terror attacks in the name of Allah. Afzal Ashraf from the Royal United Services Institute, notes:
There are five pillars of Islam which Muslims have to adhere during Ramadan – charity, prayer, fasting, recital of faith and pilgrimage.
What the extremists have done is to add a sixth pillar and that’s jihad.
Bin Laden said that sixth pillar eclipsed the traditional five pillars and they say that if you commit violence that is the ultimate form of worship.
Ramadan concludes on Friday July 17.
The FBI is currently investigating whether the act was inspired by the Islamic State or some similar group. This is a developing story, updates will be posted as appropriate.
