Michael McCarthy, the man arrested in connection with the death of Boston toddler Bella “Baby Doe” Bond, is alleged to have killed the 2-year-old because he thought the child was “possessed.”
A law enforcement source involved in the investigation of the tragic death of the toddler formerly known as “Baby Doe” told CNN on Saturday that Bella Bond was allegedly beaten to death by her mother’s boyfriend Michael McCarthy because he thought the toddler was possessed by demons.
The same source claims that Rachelle Bond, Bella’s mother, told police they kept the child’s body in a fridge for a month before dumping it by the harbor.
Bella’s mother, Rachelle Bond, 40, and her boyfriend, Michael McCarthy, 35, were arrested in connection with the death of Bella earlier this week. He was charged with murder; she was charged as an accessory to murder after the fact, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel Conley said.
A law enforcement source reports McCarthy is not Bella’s biological father.
In a statement, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel Conley said:
This child, whose very name means beauty, was murdered…
The tragedy of her death is compounded by the fact that her short life ended not by illness or accident, but we believe by an act of violence in the very place where she should have felt safest, in her home.
We allege that McCarthy caused Bella’s death, that he did so intentionally, that he and Bond took specific steps to keep Bella’s death a secret to avoid prosecution.
Bella Bond, the toddler who became known as “Baby Doe” after her remains, wrapped in a trash bag, were found in June on a rocky shoreline in Boston Harbor, captured the nation’s attention this summer as investigators struggled to ascertain the identity of the dead toddler with an angelic face.
