Sunday school teaching Alabama Governor Robert Bentley is going down in flames after being busted in a tawdry affair with a top political advisor.
Governor Bentley is facing growing pressure from constituents, and numerous calls for his resignation, after allegations that he has been having an affair with top advisor Rebekah Caldwell Mason were made public last week.
Adding insult to injury, Governor Bentley has been expelled from his church where he once held the rank of deacon and bragged about teaching Sunday school to the kids.
In fact, both Bentley and his top advisor, Rebekah Mason, have been expelled from First Baptist Church of Tuscaloosa after the release of an audio recording in which Bentley makes sexually explicit comments to Mason.
MSNBC reports that while running for governor in 2010, Bentley repeatedly emphasized his Christian “family values” credentials. The Republican candidate not only ran ads featuring his wife and family, but Bentley also said he believes so strongly in the sanctity of traditional marriage that as far as he’s concerned, when same-sex couples wed, their marriages should be dismissed as “social experiments.”
However, the so-called family values champion was divorced by his wife last August, while he apparently was having a long term affair with Mason. Making the whole episode even more tawdry and incestuous, Mason’s husband, Jonathan P. Mason, who has remained at his wife’s side throughout the scandal, serves as Executive Director of the Governor’s Office of Faith Based and Community Initiatives.
In recorded conversations form 2014 Governor Bentley can be heard telling Rebekah Mason the following:
- “You’d kiss me. I love that you know I do love that. You know what, when I stand behind you, and I put my arms around you, and I put my arms on your breasts, and I put my head… and pull you real close. “
- “Hey, I love that, too, putting my hands under you.”
- “I love you. I love to talk to you.”
- “But baby, let me tell you what we’ve gonna have to do tonight, start locking the door. If we’re gonna do what we did the other day, we’re gonna have to start locking the door.”
Despite the smoking gun recording and other evidence, Governor Bentley and Rebekah Mason deny any sexual affair took place. However, the facts suggest otherwise.
