GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump says women who undergo abortions should be punished.
In exclusive interview with MSNBC’s Chris Matthews, Trump said that if abortion was banned, “there has to be some form of punishment” for women who choose to have an abortion.
In the interview, Trump described himself multiple times as “pro-life” but struggled to define what the legal ramifications of that position should be. When continually pressed for what the answer is regarding punishing women who would break any theoretical ban, Trump said the “answer is that there has to be some form of punishment, yeah.”
The Hill reports Matthews asked Trump whether he would ban abortion and how he would enforce such a policy. Trump said:
The answer is that there has to be some form of punishment.
For the woman?
Yeah, there has to be some form.
Trump failed to offer specifics about what form the punishment should take, saying only that the punishment would “have to be determined.”
Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders slammed Trump for his comments on abortion, calling them “shameful.” Taking to Twitter, Sanders declared:
Your Republican frontrunner, ladies and gentlemen. Shameful.
Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton also slammed Trump, saying his comments were “horrific and telling.”
Trump is not alone in his over-the-top and despicable anti-abortion rhetoric. Conservative social media activists and others have been calling for the execution of abortion providers. More alarming, late last year a Christian terrorist killed three individuals and wounded nine others in an attack on a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado Springs.
One thing is clear, there is a growing assault on abortion rights across the country, an assault led by Republicans like Donald Trump.
Bottom line: Trump is a monster. Abortion is a necessary medical procedure, and a human right. However, if left unchecked, Republicans like Trump will deny women their basic human rights, and return us to the dark days of back alley, coat-hanger abortions.
