Republican Lawmaker Defends Discrimination Against Atheists

Republican Lawmaker Defends Discrimination Against Atheists May 10, 2016

Colorado lawmaker claims advertising scholarships for atheists is unconstitutional.

Religious Right activist and Colorado state legislator Gordon Klingenschmitt says that advertising scholarships for atheists is unconstitutional, but advertising scholarships for Christians is not a problem.

Appearing on his “Pray In Jesus Name” program, Rep. Klingenschmitt commented on a lawsuit filed against a California school district for refusing to inform students about scholarships that were being offered by atheist groups.  Klingenschmitt defended the school district by making the absurd claim that advertising atheist scholarships was unconstitutional:

To advertise atheist scholarships to all of the Christian students or the Jewish students or even the homosexual students, to say that everyone should be able to get this money if you just renounce your faith, that, to me, is itself unconstitutional. There is no place for atheist recruiters to come into your schools and recruit children to violate their parent’s religion.

Adding insult to injury, and absurdity to absurdity, Klingenschmitt goes on to claim that advertising Christian scholarships is perfectly acceptable because the majority of students in public school are Christians, noting:

for an opportunity to be offered to a Christian child that, if they write an essay about God that they should get Christian scholarship money, that’s not bribery. They’re keeping their own religion … You’re reinforcing what the parents want their kid’s faith to be. This is a parental rights issue.

In short, according to Klingenschmitt, advertising scholarships for atheists is unconstitutional, constitutes bribery, and violates parental rights; while on the other hand, advertising scholarships for Christians is completely legitimate, does not constitute bribery, and “is a parental rights issue.”

Bottomline: Klingenschmitt is a Christian extremist with a well documented history of lunacy in service to the Lord. His attempt to defend discrimination against atheists is absurd. His words and actions demonstrate that he is intellectually incompetent, and unfit to serve in public office.
