GOP Senator encourages audience at Faith and Freedom conference to pray for Obama’s death.
Senator David Perdue, a freshman senator from Georgia, opened his remarks at the Faith & Freedom Coalition’s Road to Majority conference by encouraging attendees to pray for President Obama’s death.
Senator Perdue said:
We should pray for him like Psalms 109:8 says: May his days be short and let another have his office.
Psalm 109 is a prayer for vengeance, a prayer for the death of a leader. The full prayer Senator Perdue is referencing reads:
Let his days be few; Let another take his office.
Let his children be fatherless And his wife a widow.
Let his children wander about and beg; And let them seek sustenance far from their ruined homes.
Let the creditor seize all that he has, And let strangers plunder the product of his labor.
Let there be none to extend loving kindness to him, Nor any to be gracious to his fatherless children.
Let his posterity be cut off; In a following generation let their name be blotted out.
Let the iniquity of his fathers be remembered before the LORD, And do not let the sin of his mother be blotted out.
Let them be before the LORD continually, That He may cut off their memory from the earth;
Because he did not remember to show loving kindness, But persecuted the afflicted and needy man, And the despondent in heart, to put them to death.
Many called for apologies for the outrageous remarks, including Georgia Democratic Party spokesman Michael Smith, who issued this scathing statement:
Earlier this week, we learned that Senator Perdue didn’t have the constitution to take a stand against Donald Trump’s racist remarks. Now, we’re getting a clearer picture of the kind of petty, vile politician he really his. Joking about the death of the President of the United States is contemptible and beneath the office of a United States Senator. Senator Perdue should apologize immediately—not only to President Obama, but to the people of Georgia. These comments have brought shame upon our state, and certainly do not reflect our values.
Adam Jentleson, a spokesman for Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, tweeted:
Republican Senator David Perdue is praying for President Obama to die. This is why Trump is the GOP nominee.
This is not the first time a Republican leader has publicly called on Christians to pray for the death of President Obama. In 2012 Kansas House Speaker Mike O’Neal referenced Psalm 109 when asking fellow Republican House members to pray for President Obama’s death.
In fact, a Christian Science Monitor report from November 16, 2009, detailed the popularity of bumper stickers among conservative Christians that read:
Pray for Obama: Psalm 109:8.
Bottom line: When Republicans pray for Obama’s death it should come as no surprise that a racist bigot like Donald Trump is the party’s nominee.
