Faith healing kills: At the time of his death the 15-year-old weighed only 37 pounds.
Emil and Rodica Radita are currently on trial after being charged with first-degree murder in connection to the death of their son, Alexandru (Alex) Radita.
Prosecutors claim the Christian parents refused to treat their son’s diabetes, choosing prayer over medical treatment.
Testimony heard last week in the murder trial of the extremely religious parents revealed that the parents prayed over the boy instead of taking him to a doctor.
In addition, the parents told friends at their local church that their son had died, but through prayer had risen from the grave.
According to reports, Emil and Rodica Radita refused to treat their son’s Type-1 diabetes. Despite a diagnosis at age 3, Alex rarely received proper treatment. His untreated diabetes resulted in numerous hospitalizations over 12 years, until Alex died in 2013.
The diabetic 15-year-old died after suffering complications due to starvation. The extremely emaciated teen was found dead by paramedics in an upstairs bedroom of the family home.
According to the testimony of a paramedic who was called to the Radita home, Alex was “emaciated to the fact that he looked mummified.” Indeed, his physical condition was so disturbing, many of the emergency responders who found the emaciated child inside the family’s home had to seek psychological services. At trial the court heard that Alex’s parents had prayed for two hours before calling 911 after his death, and allegedly told friends from church their son had died but was “resurrected by God.”
According to evidence from the first officer on scene who testified at the murder trial, Alex had been lying dead in his home for up to 36 hours before 911 was called, according to evidence from the first officer on scene who testified at the murder trial of his parents
According to court reports, emergency responders encountered about 20 people who were inside, kneeling, chanting and praying when called to the family’s home.
Rodica Radita, 53, and Emil Radita, 59, are currently on trial, charged with first-degree murder in connection with their 15-year-old son’s death.
