Gay and lesbian parents should not be eligible for child care tax credits according to Rep. Steve King.
Speaking on CNN earlier today, the Iowa congressman defended his backward views on marriage and child rearing, telling CNN’s Chris Cuomo that so-called “natural families’ were the only families that deserve child care tax credits.
When you say encourage more babies and all that, would you include the LGBT community in terms of families to encourage having kids and expanding them?
King, a Donald Trump supporter, replied by promoting his idea of a “natural family,” declaring:
I want to respect all people, but I want to promote the natural family, Chris, and I think that’s the most wholesome thing we can do. The natural family is a man and a woman joined together in — hopefully — holy matrimony, blessed by God with children.
CNN host Chris Cuomo pushed back on King’s offensive anti-gay rhetoric, noting that overwhelming scientific research indicates that children of same sex parents do as well if not better than the children of heterosexual families, asking:
I want to respect all human persons who are all gifts from God. But I want to encourage the natural family. That’s the best and most wholesome way to raise a child and that’s been the case throughout thousands of years of human history and we need to go with what works.
We know that what works is loving the kid, giving them the attention, giving them the time. There is no reason to believe that you have to have a man and woman to do that… Why not encourage anything that gets a child loved and provided for?
King failed to offer an adequate response to Cuomo’s query. Instead, he simply doubled-down on his insensitivity and bigotry.
