Trump Promises State Sanctioned Religious Discrimination

Trump Promises State Sanctioned Religious Discrimination September 27, 2016

Trump promises to support religious based discrimination against LGBT people if elected president.

In a little noticed press release issued late last week Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump pledged his support for the First Amendment Defense Act, which would explicitly authorize discrimination against LGBT people.

In the statement, issued September 22 and titled “Issues Of Importance To Catholics,” Trump promises to protect sincerely held religious beliefs, even if that means sanctioning discrimination against LGBT people and others.

In the statement Trump declares:

If I am elected president and Congress passes the First Amendment Defense Act, I will sign it to protect the deeply held religious beliefs of Catholics and the beliefs of Americans of all faiths.

The First Amendment Defense Act (FADA) is a draconian policy advocated by conservative religious extremists. FADA explicitly promotes anti-LGBT discrimination by providing special protections for people who wish to claim their religious faith prohibits them from performing certain acts, including baking a cake for a same-sex wedding, or allowing a child to be adopted by a same-sex couple.

In addition, FADA sanctions discrimination against single mothers, unwed couples, interfaith couples, and interracial couples. In fact, one could refuse to marry two short people if their view against short people marrying is a sincerely held belief.

Indeed, critics also report the legislation would allow discrimination against people of any orientation who have sex out of wedlock.

Rev. Barry W. Lynn, Executive Director of Americans United for Separation of Church and State, explains:

FADA greenlights discrimination against many of our friends, family and neighbors. The list of those who could face harm is long: unmarried couples, couples in which one person has been married before, single mothers and anyone who has sex outside of marriage. We all know, however, that the real target of the law is same-sex couples.

Bottom line: If you really needed another reason to oppose Trump, here it is. Trump’s willingness to sign into law draconian legislation that would allow religious based discrimination against LGBT people and others is yet another reason out of a myriad number of reasons why Donald Trump is at once both unfit to be president, and a deplorable human being.
