Christian schadenfreude: Sadistic conservative Christians take delight in Trump’s transgender troop ban and celebrate the president’s cruel bigotry.
In an obnoxious display, conservative Christian came out in force to support Trump’s ill-conceived and poorly thought out scheme to ban transgender people from serving in the military.
Family Research Council President Tony Perkins released the following statement:
I applaud President Trump for keeping his promise to return to military priorities – and not continue the social experimentation of the Obama era that has crippled our nation’s military. The military can now focus its efforts on preparing to fight and win wars rather than being used to advance the Obama social agenda.
President Trump recognizes what the nation’s military leadership and the American people realize, this Obama policy makes no sense.
The last thing we should be doing is diverting billions of dollars from mission-critical training to something as controversial as gender reassignment surgery. However, the cost to readiness, recruitment, retention, morale and cohesion would have been even greater under the Obama policy. As our nation faces serious national security threats, our troops shouldn’t be forced to endure hours of transgender ‘sensitivity’ classes and politically-correct distractions like this one.
On his Facebook page, leading evangelist Franklin Graham celebrated Trump’s transgender troop ban:
(President Donald J. Trump made a bold move today in announcing that the U.S. military will not accept transgender individuals to serve. He’s exactly right. And I’m proud that we have a president who sees and understands the truth. As Americans, whether you’re a Democrat or a Republican, we should celebrate when our leaders do the right thing for our country. President Obama’s policy on this was a mistake. We don’t need people in the military who are confused about their gender—and the military shouldn’t be aiding in gender “transitions.” President Trump is laser focused on making our military better and stronger. Pray for him as he faces critics and opposition.)
Bryan Fischer, radio host for American Family Radio and former vice president of the American Family Association, also celebrated Trump’s transgender troop ban, openly expressing his Christian bigotry via Twitter:
A huge, huge win for sexual normalcy in public and military policy. And a win for national security. https://t.co/R5yn1dmca3

(A huge, huge win for sexual normalcy in public and military policy. And a win for national security.)
Right Wing Watch reports on some of the more extreme reactions, for example:
Anti-gay extremist Theodore Shoebat found in Trump’s announcement yet another opportunity to express his belief that gay people should be exterminated: “While this is great news, what really needs to be done is the death penalty for sodomites.”
Commenting on the obnoxious display of Christian hate, Bill Browning, writing for LGBTQ Nation, notes:
While their supposed savior was best known for his radical inclusivity and teachings to love one another, these charlatans are celebrating discrimination in the name of their God.
Browning is right to condemn these cruel Christian charlatans celebrating discrimination. They are despicable cowards that take pleasure in the pain and suffering of transgender people all the while hiding behind their petty religious superstitions.
But ultimately, it maybe that the joke is really on the hateful conservative Christians. It turns out Trump’s Twitter announcement that transgender individuals will not be allowed to serve in the military “in any capacity” may have been all smoke and mirrors, and without substance. Politico reports that according to the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff there will be “no modifications” to the military’s transgender policy as a result of Trump’s twitter rant.
In a message sent to the chiefs of the military branches and senior enlisted leaders, Marine Gen. Joe Dunford, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said that the military will continue to “treat all of our personnel with respect.”
Bottom line: Conservative Christian leaders cheer Trump’s transgender troop ban, and celebrate Trump’s cruel bigotry towards transgender people; but no worries, they will call it “Christian love.”
