Billionaire Education Secretary Betsy DeVos is lazy, incompetent, and angry about her limited power to enact her conservative Christian agenda.
According to a new report from the watchdog group American Oversight, Education Secretary Betsy DeVos is a lazy government employee who often skips work or leaves early, working less than four days a week on average, and often failing to even show up for duty.
The report, titled “Unexcused Absences,” is based on information gathered from an FOIA (Freedom of Information Act) request, and gives a detailed account of how often DeVos is absent from work:
An analysis by American Oversight found that during that period — which stretches from February 8th to July 19th — DeVos only completed a full day of work 67% of the time.
The report continues, calling for an investigation into DeVos for her “ frequent absences” and attending negligence:
American Oversight is calling for the Department of Education’s Inspector General to investigate whether Secretary DeVos’ frequent absences have had an impact on the management of the department and whether adequate records of her work are being maintained.
Commenting on the report, Shareblue notes:
The report found that over those five and a half months, DeVos took 15 days off, 21 half days off, and 11 long weekends — during a time period that included 113 federally mandated work days.
Offering an explanation for her lack of attendance and incompetence, Shareblue also notes:
A theocratic religious activist, DeVos had hoped to, in her own words, “advance God’s Kingdom” in American schools — presumably by privatizing school systems and directing federal funds to parochial institutions. Unfortunately for her, the federal government accounts for only 13 percent of school funding — most of the money is raised at the state and local level. So her pet ambition was thwarted.
Lat month Politico ran an in-depth report on DeVos that had many people speculating that she would soon resign from her position leading the Department of Education.
In that report the director of the independent education think tank FutureEd, Thomas Toch, told Politico that DeVos was incompetent, and had so alienated senior staff that department insiders expected her to resign soon. Toch told Politico:
She can’t fill her senior staff slots,. Morale is terrible at the department.
I’ll tell you, in Washington education circles, the conversation is already about the post-DeVos landscape, because the assumption is she won’t stay long. I think she’s been probably one of the most ineffective people to ever hold the job.
Bottom line: Betsy DeVos is a radical Christian extremist who wants to use American public schools to advance “God’s kingdom.” She wants to destroy public education and use taxpayer money to fund private Christian schools, and she has no problem with private schools using taxpayer money to discriminate against gays and anyone else who offends the sensibilities of conservative Christians.
The good news: DeVos is incompetent, lazy, and angry that she is unable to fully enact her dangerous conservative Christian agenda.
