Dog whistle politics: Attorney General Jeff Sessions praises the “Anglo-American heritage of law enforcement.”
While speaking to the National Sheriffs’ Association earlier today, Attorney General Jeff Sessions praised the sheriffs’ “Anglo-American heritage,” a phrase that no doubt brought a smile to the lips of white supremacists everywhere.
In remarks made at the National Sheriffs Association winter meeting, Sessions said:
I want to thank every sheriff in America. Since our founding, the independently elected sheriff has been the people’s protector, who keeps law enforcement close to and accountable to people through the elected process.
The office of sheriff is a critical part of the Anglo-American heritage of law enforcement. We must never erode this historic office.
Jeff Sessions did a speech and said “the office of Sheriff is a critical part of the Anglo-American heritage of law enforcement.” He wanted to go on record with the ANGLO-AMERICAN description. He went full white supremacy, and every Black and non-white sheriff should be insulted pic.twitter.com/F0PYS5j7es

Reporting on the story, CNN notes:
Invoking “Anglo-American heritage” seems to have been an impromptu decision by the attorney general. A written version of the remarks says that Sessions was supposed to say: “The sheriff is a critical part of our legal heritage.”
So, the good news is that praising “the Anglo-American heritage of law enforcement,” was not a part of the approves speech transcript. The bad news: Sessions is the kind of guy that just naturally wants to praise “the Anglo-American heritage of law enforcement.”
Indeed, Sessions is the kind of guy who thought the KKK was a great group of guys until he found out that some members were smoking marijuana.
The notion that he would use a racially charged phrase guaranteed to thrill the white nationalist base of the Republican party should come as no surprise. He was, after all, appointed to the office by President Donald Trump, the White Supremacist in Chief.
Bottom line: Attorney General Jeff Sessions faces fresh and well deserved charges of racism after praising the “Anglo-American heritage of law enforcement.”
And so it goes.
