In a new low President Trump celebrates violence against journalists, praising Rep. Greg Gianforte for body-slamming a reporter.
Even more horrifying, the Trump-loving crowd cheered when the president praised the violent assault against a reporter who was simply asking a politician some questions.
Speaking at an election rally in Montana Thursday night, Trump explicitly endorsed violent physical assault against reporters. Speaking about Rep. Greg Gianforte, who pleaded guilty to assaulting a journalist from the UK’s Guardian newspaper on the eve of his election last year.

At the rally Trump said:
Greg is smart. And by the way, never wrestle him. Any guy who can do a body-slam, he’s my guy.
I had heard that he body-slammed a reporter. And he was way up … I said, ‘Oh this is terrible, he’s gonna lose. Then I said, ‘Wait a minute, I know Montana pretty well, I think it might help him.’ And it did.
Trump’s celebration of violence against journalists marks a new low for a president who routinely demonizes the press in a fashion not seen since the rise of Adolf Hitler in Nazi Germany.
As one might expect, the good people on Twitter were horrified at Trump’s dangerous remarks:
This is just sick. Trump is creating the permissive conditions for future violence against journalists. “Trump jokes about congressman assaulting reporter: ‘Any guy who can do a body slam … he’s my guy’ @CNNPolitics https://t.co/noS9QUSnCm

The disturbing part of Trump’s jokes about Gianforte was the effect on the crowd. I saw one young man in the crowd making body slam gestures. He looked at me and ran his thumb across his throat. I talked to him after the rally was over. He couldn’t stop laughing.

Ready for this? Trump just hit a new low. While at his #MAGAmob rally tonight he praised GOP Rep Gianforte’s body slam of a journalist. He’s applauding the assault of a journalist. WaPo journalist Jamal Khashoggi was just assassinated. He’s giving a thumbs up to Saudi Arabia.— Scott Dworkin (@funder) October 19, 2018
Trump supporters last week: Eric Holder is a meanie because he used the word “kick” metaphorically.

Sixteen days after the torture & murder of Jamal Khashoggi, Trump praises the MT Congressman who assaulted a reporter & was charged for the crime. “Any guy that can do a body slam, he’s my kind of—he’s my guy,” This is the kind of violent garbage he’s spewing at his rallies now.

Bottom line: In a new low President Trump celebrates physical violence against journalists by praising Rep. Greg Gianforte for body-slamming a reporter. Even more horrifying, the Trump-loving crowd cheered for Trump when he endorsed physical violence against reporters.
