Theocracy Alert: Matthew G. Whitaker, Trump’s new acting attorney general, claims federal judges should have a “Biblical view of justice.”
Earlier this week Trump asked for and received the resignation of Attorney General Jeff Sessions. In response to the resignation, Trump named Whitaker, Sessions’ chief of staff at the Justice Department, as the new acting attorney general.
Making the announcement Trump tweeted:
We are pleased to announce that Matthew G. Whitaker, Chief of Staff to Attorney General Jeff Sessions at the Department of Justice, will become our new Acting Attorney General of the United States. He will serve our Country well….

We are pleased to announce that Matthew G. Whitaker, Chief of Staff to Attorney General Jeff Sessions at the Department of Justice, will become our new Acting Attorney General of the United States. He will serve our Country well.
Like Sessions, Whitaker is a dangerous Christian extremist with no respect for the separation of church and state.
The Washington Post reports:
In a 2014 debate when he was running for the U.S. Senate, acting attorney general Matthew Whitaker said judges should have a Christian worldview, and that a judge with a “secular worldview” would be problematic…
A May 2014 report from the Des Moines Register covers a debate among candidates vying for a U.S. Senate seat from Iowa. Whitaker was a candidate at the time, and participated in the debate, although he eventually lost the GOP primary to Joni Ernst.
At that debate Whitaker declared:
If they (judges) have a secular worldview, then I’m going to be very concerned about how they judge.
I’d like to see things like their world view, what informs them. Are they people of faith? Do they have a biblical view of justice?
And what I know is as long as they have that world view, that they’ll be a good judge. And if they have a secular world view, where this is all we have here on Earth, then I’m going to be very concerned about that judge.
In addition to rejecting the separation of church and state, denigrating secular judges, and insisting that judges must have “a biblical view of justice,” Whitaker also believes that religious liberty protects people who wish to insult, demean, and discriminate against LGBT people.
Raw Story reports:
Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker just three years ago defended a newspaper editor who had publicly labeled LGBTQ people “the gaystapo” and “the enemy.” Whitaker claimed his client’s “sincerely-held religious beliefs” gave him a right to denigrate LGBTQ people – while keeping his job.
Bottom line: Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker is a dangerous Christian extremist who claims federal judges should have a “Biblical view of justice.”
