Let them eat cake: Ivanka Trump, eldest daughter of Donald Trump, and the beneficiary of unbridled nepotism and unearned wealth, claims Americans don’t want job guarantees.
Trump, speaking with Fox News, was asked about the Green New Deal being championed by freshman Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and other progressive Democrats. In the interview with Fox News host Steve Hilton, Trump claimed that Americans don’t want job guarantees and don’t “want to be given something.”
In the interview, set to air in full on Sunday, Hilton asked Trump:
You’ve got people who will see that offer from the Democrats, from the progressive Democrats, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez: ‘Here’s the Green New Deal, here’s the guarantee of a job,’ and think, ‘yeah, that’s what I want, it’s that simple.’ What do you say to those people?
In response, Trump told Hilton:
I don’t think most Americans, in their heart, want to be given something. I’ve spent a lot of time traveling around this country over the last 4 years. People want to work for what they get.
So, I think that this idea of a guaranteed minimum is not something most people want. They want the ability to be able to secure a job. They want the ability to live in a country where’s there’s the potential for upward mobility.

Trump’s tone-deaf and condescending reply was immediately met with derision and mockery. For example, writing at Daily Beast, Erin Gloria Ryan opines:
Ivanka Trump says she opposes the Alexandria Ocasio Cortez-spearheaded Green New Deal because she feels, deep down, that people prefer to earn money rather than having it given to them. At a certain point, one has to wonder if she’s doing this on purpose, or if she’s really so far up her own ass that she’s tasting her Skinny Vanilla Lattes twice.
And on Twitter, the attacks on Trump’s clueless claims were without mercy:
When Ivanka gets a meeting with a world leader, does she tell herself that it’s because she has earned it? What about when she helps to choose the President of the World Bank? Or when China suddenly gives her a bunch of new trademarks? Is this what she thinks meritocracy is?

Things Ivanka Trump implied:
“I don’t think most Americans want to be given food even when they’re starving.”
“I don’t think most Americans want to be given shelter even when they’re freezing.”
“I don’t think most Americans want to be paid a fair wage.”

Ivanka Trump criticized the Green New Deal, saying she doesn’t think most Americans “want to be given something” like a “guaranteed job.” What, like the one she got in the White House?

Hey @IvankaTrump, will you renounce your inheritance and the puppet job your daddy gave you where you don’t have to do anything but sit around and smile for cameras?
You know…because surely you want to work for what you get. https://t.co/snceKCoTNj

I suppose you’ve worked for everything you have, isn’t that right Ivanka? https://t.co/U9ftJWnJyI

Bottom line: Ivanka Trump, a millionaire heiress, President Trump’s daughter, a White House senior adviser, the beneficiary of unbridled nepotism and unearned wealth, a woman who has been given everything, claims Americans don’t want job guarantees because they don’t “want to be given something.”
