Longing for Armageddon, conservative Christians celebrate after Trump signs proclamation formally recognizing the contested Golan Heights as part of the state of Israel.
US President Donald Trump has officially recognised Israeli sovereignty over the occupied Golan Heights, captured from Syria in 1967, in a move hailed as “historic justice” by the country’s prime minister.
The proclamation reads in part:
The State of Israel took control of the Golan Heights in 1967 to safeguard its security from external threats.Today, aggressive acts by Iran and terrorist groups, including Hizballah, in southern Syria continue to make the Golan Heights a potential launching ground for attacks on Israel. Any possible future peace agreement in the region must account for Israel’s need to protect itself from Syria and other regional threats,” the proclamation continued. “Based on these unique circumstances, it is therefore appropriate to recognize Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights.
Before signing the measure Trump said:
Today I am taking historic action to promote Israel’s ability to defend itself and really to have a very powerful, very strong national security, which they’re entitled to have.
Commenting on the Golan Heights proclamation, TruthOut notes the political significance of Trump’s proclamation for his evangelical base:
The primary reason for the U.S. announcement is domestic: Trump is speaking to his evangelical base, which covets Israel as a matter of prophecy and ideology. American Evangelicals consider the in-gathering of a global Jewry in Israel as the prerequisite element to beget Armageddon and the return of Christ.
Discussing Trump’s plan to officially recognize the Golan Heights as part of the state of Israel, Secretary of State Pompeo said it is “possible” that President Donald Trump was sent by God to save the Jewish people from Iran.
During a recent interview with CBN Pompeo was asked:
Could it be that that President Trump right now has been sort of raised for such a time as this just like Queen Esther to help save the Jewish people from an Iranian menace?
Pompeo agreed that it was possible that God sent Trump to save the Jews and protect Israel, declaring:
As a Christian I certainly believe that’s possible.
I am confident that the Lord is at work here.
Baptist News reports that conservative Christians are taking “delight in Trump’s Golan Heights statement,” noting:
Trump supporter Robert Jeffress, pastor First Baptist Church of Dallas who delivered a prayer at the ceremonial opening of the new U.S. embassy in Jerusalem last May, called the declaration “courageous.”
“When you oppose Israel, you are opposing the God of Israel,” Jeffress said on the Fox Business program Lou Dobbs Tonight.
John Hagee, head of the 5 million-member Christians United for Israel, said the group has stressed the Golan Heights importance to Israel’s security in meetings with the administration and other officials on Capitol Hill.
Commenting on Trump’s Golan Heights proclamation, Hagee, founder and senior pastor of Cornerstone Church in San Antonio, Texas, said:
We are very grateful to the President for having the courage to express that position and look forward to the US formally recognizing Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights.
When it was under Syrian control, the Golan Heights was used to attack Israeli civilians in the region below.
During the Syrian civil war we saw all too well the brutality of the Assad regime, including the willingness of Damascus to use chemical weapons. Recognizing Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights is the right policy and the time to enact that policy has come.
Bottom line: Conservative Christians cheer Trump’s Golan Heights proclamation as a prerequisite for Armageddon and the return of Christ.
