Stephen Bratton, a Texas pastor who backed legislation that would criminalize abortion, has been arrested and charged for raping a teenage relative multiple times a day for several years.
Associated Press reports:
Stephen Bratton is accused of subjecting the relative to inappropriate touching that escalated to “sexual intercourse multiple times a day or several times a week” from 2013 to 2015, according to Thomas Gilliland, a spokesman with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.
According to reports, last April Pastor Bratton publicly testified in support of legislation that would have criminalized abortion in Texas, treating the routine medical procedure as a homicide, and subjecting women who underwent the procedure to prosecution and potentially the death penalty.
While offering public testimony in support of the bill in April, Pastor Bratton cited the Bible, and told lawmakers:
Whoever authorizes or commits murder is guilty. They’re guilty already in a court that is far more weighty than what is here in Texas.
Before his arrest, Bratton, a Southern Baptist, was a pastor at Grace Family Baptist Church near Houston. After the pastor confessed to his crimes to his wife and fellow church leaders last month, Bratton resigned from his position at the church.
In addition, after confessing his crimes, church leaders went to the police, and Bratton was arrested and charged last Friday. The Texas pastor was released on a $50,000 bond the following day.
A spokesman with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office reports Bratton is accused of inappropriately touching his teenage relative repeatedly which escalated to “sexual intercourse multiple times a day or several times a week.”
Bottom line: Stephen Bratton, a Texas pastor who publicly testified in support of legislation that would give the death penalty to women who had an abortion, is charged with sexual asasault and the rape of a teenage relative.
