Stupid for Jesus: Conservative Christian Mike Huckabee claims that thoughts and prayers are the only thing that can stop mass shootings.
The Trump-supporting former Arkansas Governor and former Republican presidential candidate wrote a blog post after the recent mass shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, to promote his brand of toxic religious superstition and profound ignorance.
In his post Huckabee declared:
Despite all those who are denouncing the idea of prayers for the victims (do a Google search for “Thoughts and prayers are not enough” and see how many hits you get), I will continue to pray for the victims and their families and for an end to this mindless violence, and I hope you will, too.
In fact, … I would posit that the lack of thoughts and prayers is probably the single biggest factor in what is behind them.
The stupid, it burns.
For the record, thoughts and prayers will accomplish nothing. Prayers will not stop bullets. Prayers will not change the gun laws. Prayers will not change the culture of the gun that plagues the U.S. Prayers will not stop the terrorist organization known as the NRA.
Prayers are nothing but spiritual masturbation: they might make the person doing the praying feel a little better, but prayers do nothing to effect change in the real world.
As a nation we live with and tolerate a culture of gun violence. All the while any proposal to enact sensible reform to curb gun violence is squashed by the the NRA and the attending all powerful gun lobby.
Indeed, the NRA and the gun lobby intimidates and bullies politicians, while spreading deception and misinformation to the general public. They are the equivalent of the 20th century tobacco lobby, merchants of death, claiming their product is safe while countless Americans die.
The fact is America has a fetish for guns, and that perverse fetish for guns will not be cured by thoughts and prayers.
As for Huckabee, it is no secret that he is a dangerous and deranged Christian extremist. In the past Huckabee promised that if elected president he would fight the “secular theocracy” that is supposedly destroying Christian liberty in America; made the false claim that pastors would face civil and criminal penalties if they refused to perform same-sex marriage; and said if elected president he would ignore the Supreme Court ruling on marriage equality because the Supreme Court is not the “Supreme Being.”
Indeed, the man is a monster. In 2015 this radical Christian extremist suggested that poor people convicted of nonviolent crimes should be sold into slavery, arguing that Biblical slavery is preferable to the contemporary criminal justice system.
Bottom line: Conservative Christian Mike Huckabee claims that thoughts and prayers are the only thing that can stop mass shootings.
