House Democrats Plan To Strip Tax-Exempt Status From Christian Hate Groups

House Democrats Plan To Strip Tax-Exempt Status From Christian Hate Groups September 21, 2019

Good News: House Democrats are saying no to government subsidized hate, and plan to deny over 60 Christian hate groups tax-exempt status.

Washington Examiner reports:

House Democrats on the Ways and Means Committee said on Thursday that over 60 alleged hate groups, mostly socially conservative organizations, anti-immigration entities, and religious groups should be stripped of their tax-exempt status.

Lifesite News reports:

House Democrats are calling for 60 alleged “hate” groups, that include mostly socially conservative and some religious-based groups, to be stripped of their 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status for opposing, among other things, homosexuality, and LGBT ideology in general.

The following is a series of tweets issued by the official Twitter account of the Ways & Means Committee illustrating the problem:

At the hearing, held earlier this week, Committee Chairman Richard Neal (D-Mass.) declared:

Our tax code is no place for hate. Groups that propagate white supremacy, anti-Semitism, and hatred for the LGBTQ community, among others, do not deserve a government subsidy through tax exemption. Hate is not charitable…

And in his opening statement Rep. John Lewis (D), a veteran civil rights advocate, said in part:

Today, the Oversight Subcommittee will review how the tax code supports hate groups.

The code exempts some charitable and educational organizations from paying taxes.

Some of these organizations promote hate based on race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, or ethnicity.

Their actions taint the good work of all tax-exempt organizations.

Hate is not consistent with the goodwill of our nation and its people.

I believe that the federal government should not sponsor or support groups whose hatred seeks to divide us.

Any tax-exempt organization that promotes hate and sows the seeds of violence is one too many.

Complaining about the plan to deny Christian hate groups tax-exempt status, Tony Perkins, the president of the Family Research Cancel, a Christian hate group, told his supporters:

Democrats want to weaponize the IRS against Christian nonprofits and others with whom they disagree. But don’t think for a second that they’ll stop with a list of 60. If they succeed in making the Bible “hate speech,” they’ll march on to America’s churches — and then to anyone with politically incorrect views.

Perkins should be complaining. If the Democrats have their way, he could be out of a job. And that would be a good thing.

Bottom line: Despite complaints from supporters of Christian hate groups, House Democrats are saying no to government subsidized hate, and plan to deny over 60 Christian hate groups tax-exempt status.
