White Supremacy for Jesus: In a horrifying racial assault at the Virginia Christian school where Karen Pence teaches, three white boys attacked a black girl, holding her down and cutting off her dreadlocks while calling them “nappy” and telling her she was “ugly.”
The Week reports:
A 12-year-old student at Immanuel Christian School, a private K-12 school in Fairfax, Virginia, says three sixth-grade boys pinned her down during recess on Monday and cut off her dreadlocks. “I was about to go down the slide, and the three boys came up and surrounded me,” the girl, Amari Allen, told The Washington Post on Thursday. “They were saying my hair was nappy and I was ugly and I shouldn’t have been born.” Allen, who is black, said one boy covered her mouth, the second grabbed her arms, and the third one cut her hair. All three boys, she says, are white.
WUSA9, a local CBS affiliate reports:
Amari Allen said she has never been more traumatized in her life until Monday when she said a group of white male classmates attacked her on the playground at Immanuel Christian School, a private K-12 school, in Fairfax, Virginia.
Amari tells WUSA9 that one boy covered her mouth and the second boy put her hands behind her back, while the third boy pulled out scissors and cut her medium-length locks while calling her names.
TONIGHT AT 11: “One of them put my hands behind my back. One of them covered my mouth. They kept on laughing and calling me names,” said Amari who had her locs cut by bullies at a private #VA school. #Springfield I was heartbroken just listening to this. Smh. @wusa9 pic.twitter.com/B1DtIlHXDE

Karen Pence, wife of Mike Pence, teaches art at Immanuel Christian School in Northern Virginia, the school where the hate crime occurred. The school, a cesspool of Christian bigotry and hatred, bans gay and transgender students, and requires all employees to sign a pledge declaring marriage is only between a man and a woman.
Reporting on the story, Huffington Post notes Immanuel Christian School is a school where not everyone is welcome:
It’s not a school where everyone is welcome. In a “parent agreement” posted online, the school says it will refuse admission to students who participate in or condone homosexual activity. The 2018 employment application also makes candidates sign a pledge not to engage in homosexual activity or violate the “unique roles of male and female.”
I understand that the term ‘marriage’ has only one meaning; the uniting of one man and one woman. Moral misconduct which violates the bona fide occupational qualifications for employees includes, but is not limited to, such behaviors as the following: heterosexual activity outside of marriage (e.g., premarital sex, cohabitation, extramarital sex), homosexual or lesbian sexual activity, polygamy, transgender identity, any other violation of the unique roles of male and female, sexual harassment, use or viewing of pornographic material or websites.
NBC News reports:
In a parent agreement posted on the school’s website, it states that Immanuel Christian School reserves the right to “refuse admission” or “discontinue enrollment” of a student if “the atmosphere or conduct within a particular home, the activities of a parent or guardian, or the activities of the student are counter to, or are in opposition to, the biblical lifestyle the school teaches.” The prohibited conduct and activities include “sexual immorality,” “homosexual activity or bi-sexual activity.”
And it gets worse. NBC News goes on to note:
In this “biblical morality” section, the parent agreement cites Leviticus 20:13, a bible passage that states, “If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.”
In other words, the parent agreement stresses the fact that according to the Bible, gays should be put to death.
And now it appears that in addition to anti-gay hatred informing the conservative Christian culture at the school, white supremacy and racial bigotry also inform the school’s conservative Christian culture. This should not be surprising. Hatred is hatred. And once a conservative Christian school like Immanuel Christian School endorses hatred for gays, it is only reasonable to assume that racial hatred is also a part of the curriculum, if not formally, at least informally.
As for the school, in an attempt at damage control, Immanuel Christian School released the following statement:
We take seriously the emotional and physical well-being of all our students, and have a zero-tolerance policy for any kind of bullying or abuse. We are deeply disturbed by the allegations being made, and are in communication with the family of the alleged victim to gather information and provide whatever support we can. We have also reached out to law enforcement to ask them to conduct a thorough investigation, and further inquiries should be directed to the Fairfax County Police.
Yet it’s hard to take the school’s statement seriously. Given the school’s open hostility and codified hatred for the LGBT people, it seems only natural that students and faculty would also embrace white supremacy and racial hatred, which also enjoys a long and well established place in conservative Christian culture.
Bottom line: In a horrifying hate crime at the Virginia Christian school where Karen Pence teaches, three white boys attacked a black girl, holding her down and cutting off her dreadlocks while calling them “nappy” and telling her she was “ugly.”
