Georgia Teacher Tells Students Confederate Flag Means ‘You Intend To Marry Your Sister’

Georgia Teacher Tells Students Confederate Flag Means ‘You Intend To Marry Your Sister’ October 4, 2019

Not the hero we deserve but the hero we need: A teacher in Georgia has been placed on administrative leave after sharing a hard truth about the Confederate flag.

Newsweek reports:

A teacher in Richmond County, Georgia, has been placed on administrative leave after showing students a picture of the Confederate flag with words that many deemed to be incendiary.

The teacher from Hephzibah High School, who has not been identified, shared the picture of the controversial flag with words that read: “A sticker you put on the back of your pickup truck to announce that you intend to marry your sister. Think of it like a white trash ‘Save the Date’ card.”

NBC News reports:

A Georgia high school teacher who allegedly presented the Confederate flag as “a sticker you put on the back of your pickup truck to announce that you intend to marry your sister,” has been placed on leave.

As one might imagine, many racist, Bible-thumping conservatives are outraged that their Confederate flag and corresponding heritage is being mocked and ridiculed in the classroom. However, reasonable people are quick to point out the obvious: the heritage symbolized by the Confederate flag is a heritage of racism, slavery, and bigotry – a heritage of hate.

To be clear, the Confederate flag is a symbol of treachery, treason, dishonor, and human degradation; it is a despicable symbol of the oppression of African-Americans; a symbol of dishonorable men who committed treason in a failed attempt to preserve a system of inhumane oppression that kept black men and women in bondage as slaves.

In short, the Confederate flag is nothing but an obnoxious reminder of the pernicious Southern effort to preserve slavery during the Civil War. As such, it should be mocked, ridiculed, and discredited at every opportunity.

However, bowing to public pressure, the Richmond County School System placed the unnamed teacher on paid administrative leave and released the following statement on the matter:

The Richmond County School System is committed to creating a diverse, equitable learning environment for all students. The language used in the example was unacceptable and has no place in our classrooms.

Bottom line: A teacher in Georgia has been placed on administrative leave after displaying a picture of the Confederate flag with words that read:

A sticker you put on the back of your pickup truck to announce that you intend to marry your sister. Think of it like a white trash ‘Save the Date’ card.
