Family values: Conservative Christian Congressman Duncan Hunter pleads guilty to illegal use of campaign funds after embezzling funds to finance multiple extramarital affairs, excessive drinking, lavish vacations, and his children’s private Christian education.
Hunter, who represents the northeastern San Diego area, had previously denied dipping into campaign funds to pay for a slew of personal expenses…
Hunter pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to misuse campaign funds and now awaits sentencing. He faces up to five years in jail.
According to earlier reports, Hunter and his wife illegally used $250,000 in campaign cash to pay for their extravagant personal life while using their Christian faith as a means to conceal their fraud.
Last year Hunter and his wife were indicted on multiple charges for misusing campaign cash to pay for their lavish vacations and other personal expenses.
At that time The San Diego Union Tribune reveals additional, troubling details concerning the congressman’s illegal activities:
The criminal indictment issued against Rep. Duncan Hunter and his wife, Margaret, late last month alleges years of cavalier spending — luxury resorts, fine dining, tequila shots and more — all paid for with political contributions.
The 47-page document also says the five-term Republican from Alpine had “personal relationships” with five unnamed individuals. The federal indictment offers few details about the relationships, and Hunter’s lawyer objected to the turn the investigation took.
Speaking to reporters outside the courthouse after his plea Tuesday, Hunter said:
I made mistakes, and that’s what today was all about.
The Hill notes that Hunter is scheduled to be sentenced March 17, and that resigning his congressional seat was not a condition of his plea deal.
Bottom line: Conservative Christian Congressman Duncan Hunter embezzled campaign funds to finance multiple extramarital affairs, excessive drinking, lavish vacations, and his children’s private Christian education.
