Arizona Bill Would Ban Discussions Of Homosexuality In Public Schools

Arizona Bill Would Ban Discussions Of Homosexuality In Public Schools January 9, 2020

American Taliban: New legislation introduced by Republican lawmaker Sylvia Allen would ban any discussion of homosexuality in Arizona public schools.

In addition, the new legislation would prohibit any public school student under the age of 12 from receiving any age appropriate sex education.

State Senator Sylvia Allen, a conservative Christian lawaker who previously advocated for mandatory church attendance, and recently warned GOP colleagues about the “browning of America,” has proposed legislation to remove the word “homosexuality” from all public school teaching materials.

Arizona Capitol Times reports:

A Republican senator wants to bar schools from teaching sex education before seventh grade.

The bill from Sen. Sylvia Allen, R-Snowflake, also deletes “homosexuality” from acts constituting “sexual conduct” in a section of the statutes, a move that appears to ban any discussion of homosexuality during sex ed courses.

The proposed legislation, Senate Bill 1082, is scheduled for a hearing by the Senate’s Education Committee on Jan. 14, 2019. Adding insult to injury, Allen chairs the Senate’s Education Committee. Adding further insult, Allen is a creationist, and believes the earth is only 6,000 years old.

Reporting on the story, LGBTQ Nation notes:

In short, Allen and her Republican cohorts want to erase teenage queer sexuality and make the safe consensual exploration of sexuality among teen peers seem scary and dangerous.

Arizona School Superintendent Kathy Hoffman said she was “appalled” by Allen’s bill, noting:

It appears to undo the progress we have made as a state. It could put the state at risk of another lawsuit.

Discussing Senator Allen’s bill Superintendent Hoffman added:

To me it says (homosexuality) should not be discussed in our schools. School leaders can interpret it that way.

Senator Tony Navarette, an openly gay Democrat from Phoenix, said:

Denying that homosexuality exists deprives students of basic factual information that could keep them safe and healthy.

 Navarette added:

This is really a health issue.

Bottom line: State Senator Sylvia Allen, a conservative Christian lawmaker who previously advocated for mandatory church attendance, and recently warned GOP colleagues about the “browning of America,” has proposed legislation to remove the word “homosexuality” from public school teaching materials.
