Minnesota Officials Link Arrested Looters to White Supremacist Groups

NBC News reports:

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz said he is aware of unconfirmed reports that gangs of white supremacists are taking advantage of the anarchy unfolding in Minneapolis to create more chaos.

AG Week reports:

Gov. Tim Walz and others said during a Saturday afternoon, May 30, press conference they have reason to believe that some of those groups have possible ties to organized crime and white supremacists, and that agitators may have infiltrated protests and plan to do so again by posing as ordinary demonstrators.

When Governor Walz was asked by a reporter at a morning press conference if he was aware that white supremacists were active in the riots, the governor said:

Based on my suspicions and what I’ve seen on this, yes.

Walz said:

The situation in Minnesota is no longer in any way about the murder of George Floyd. It is about attacking civil society, instilling fear and disrupting our great cities.

Walz noted that the widespread riots across the country appear to be part of a coordinated effort by professionals. The governor said:

We’re seeing evidence of some pretty sophisticated attempts to cause problems.

During the press conference Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan also said that some of the protesters were “white supremacists” and “anarchists.” Floyd said:

We need to create the space for people to be able to grieve, to come together, to mourn the loss of George Floyd. We cannot do that until the community can gather safely … Stay home tonight so that we can remove those folks who are harming us.

Also appearing at the press conference, Senator Amy Klobuchar repeated the theme that outsiders were responsible for much of the destruction, declaring:

They are not from our state, and they’re coming from the outside. We cannot move forward when people are burning down our city, burning down our state.

Bottom line: Minnesota officials report that most of the rioters arrested during protests over the police killing of George Floyd were outsiders, and that many are associated with white supremacist groups.
