Playing Favorites: Oregon police in Salem are caught on video warning armed white extremists to move inside before the police began acting against demonstrators protesting the police killing of George Floyd.
BuzzFeed News reports:
The police chief in Salem, Oregon, has apologized after a viral video showed one of his officers telling a group of armed white men protecting a store to shelter inside to avoid being arrested for violating a curfew so officers “don’t look like [they’re] playing favorites.”
A police officer in Salem, Oregon, told armed white men that meant to protect businesses during police brutality protests to “discreetly” stay inside before they began arresting protesters who remained in the streets after the city’s 11 pm curfew.
In a widely shared viral video, an unidentified police officer explains to a group of armed white extremists that they should move inside because police were about to begin enforcing a curfew, and the officer wanted to protect the armed white extremists. The unidentified officer said:
We’re going to really enforce the citywide curfew shutdown so we can arrest anybody walking around. My command wanted me to come talk to you guys and request that you guys secrete people inside the businesses or in your vehicles somewhere where it’s not a violation … so we don’t look like we’re playing favorites.
The officer added:
That would be unhealthy.

Note: the officer said “so we don’t look like we’re playing favorites.” The clear implication being that the police are playing favorites, they are sympathetic to the armed white extremists, and they simply don’t want the public to know where their allegiance lies.
As a result of the viral video, Salem Police Chief Jerry Moore was forced to apologize for the officer’s actions. In a video statement Moore said:
The message we have received is a concern that we are treating people differently. For that I tell you, I’m sorry — sorry there is even a thought that this department would treat some different than others.
The apology is hollow, and like most public apologies, the real regret seems to be that the police got caught playing favorites, and collaborating with armed white extremists.
Bottom line: Oregon police in Salem are caught on video warning armed white extremists to move inside before the police began acting against demonstrators protesting the police killing of George Floyd.
