Another Kind Of Bigot: An ignorant Will Smith trashes non-believers while urging voters to reject “godless” candidates.
Smith, speaking with CNN political commentator Angela Rye on her podcast “On One With Angela Rye” urged his fans not to vote for “godless leadership,” declaring at one point:
As a country, I would hope that a part of what we’re learning right now is the destructive aspects of loveless, godless leadership. Do not elect people that don’t have God and love in their hearts.

As one might imagine, conservative Christians celebrated Smith’s endorsement of religious superstition and ignorance. The conservative publication The Christian Post reports:
Actor Will Smith said that he thinks Americans should elect people who have God in their lives and love in their hearts following the uprise against racism in the nation.
Smith’s remarks are obnoxious. His assumption that “godless leadership” is bad, or that people that don’t have “God in their hearts” are bad and not worthy of support, is nothing short of bigotry.
All one needs to do is replace “godless” with “Jewish” or “Black” to see the moral and intellectual poverty of Smith’s deplorable claim.
It’s ironic, because in the interview Smith discusses the prejudice and bigotry he has faced as a Black man, yet at the same time he promotes vicious, demeaning, and false stereotypes about non-believers, feeding the Christian bigots, and giving them more ammunition and more justification to continue to stigmatize and oppress non-believers.
Smith’s remarks also reflect a poor, non-existent understanding of American history. For it is a fact that Christianity and the Christian God were used as the moral and intellectual justification for slavery, Jim Crow, and segregation. Indeed, American Christianity has always been and continues to be saturated with white supremacy.
In short, God has always stood in the way of a just and fair society, God has always been the tool of the oppressor. And Smith’s remarks only serve to reinforce this sad fact.
Bottom line: Actor Will Smith trashes non-believers while urging voters to reject “godless” candidates.
