GOP Racism: Senator Lindsey Graham says that young black people can go anywhere in South Carolina as long as they are “conservative” and “not liberal.”
Business Insider reports:
Sen. Lindsey Graham says Black people are free to ‘go anywhere’ in South Carolina so long as they’re conservative.
Lindsey Graham set off a social media storm on Friday evening when he said that young black people and immigrants can “go anywhere” in South Carolina, but added, “you just need to be conservative, not liberal.”
Outrage swept across Twitter, with calls to donate to Graham’s Democratic opponent in the state’s Senate race, Jaime Harrison, a black man.
It’s a breathtaking comment … Senator Lindsey Graham said South Carolina cops don’t pose any problems for Black people and immigrants … as long as they’re of the conservative persuasion.

He said the quiet part out loud.
Graham made his openly racist remarks during a local news forum in lieu of a debate with Democratic candidate Jaime Harrison. The scheduled debate was cancelled after Graham refused to take a COVID test. Instead, the candidates engaged in back-to-back, one-on-one interviews, rather than a debate.
At the event Graham said:
If you’re a young African American, an immigrant, you can go anywhere in this state. You just need to be conservative, not liberal.
Essentially, Graham was telling young Black people that if they want to be safe in South Carolina, they need to know their place, and be good little conservatives, so as not to offend racist white people.
As one might imagine, Graham’s open racism provoked a firestorm of criticism. The following is a sample of reactions:
Lindsey Graham in 2020 telling Black people where they can go and what they can do in South Carolina:
“If you’re a young African American, an immigrant you can go anywhere in this state(SC)…you just need to be conservative not liberal.”

Lindsey Graham is basically saying in 2020: “Boy, you gotta know your place” like we are back on a sugar cane plantation in Antebellum South.

Hey South Carolina –
Gotta say, this guy is really bad for business. This kind of racism turns off most of the country. If you want what’s best for the future of your great state, vote for @harrisonjaime and bring S.C. into the 21st century.pic.twitter.com/sAoZakaTCe
