Anti-Science Religious Extremism: California megachurch Pastor John MacArthur rejects the science behind climate change theory, while arguing that the Earth is a “disposable planet.”
MacArthur, head of Grace Community Church, a suburban Los Angeles megachurch, has been in the headlines lately for defying local COVID-19 heath guidelines, and holding indoor services for thousands with no masks and no social distancing.
However, in addition to being a COVID denier, MacArthur is also a climate change denier, who rejects the science behind climate change and argues that the Earth is a “disposable planet.”
In a sermon condemning the science supporting climate change MacArthur declared:
God intended us to use this planet, to fill this planet for the benefit of man. Never was it intended to be a permanent planet. It is a disposable planet. Christians ought to know that.
MacArthur also suggested that scientists were motivated by “political agendas” as well as “financial agendas, class warfare, class envy” and “the socialist agenda” and “ the feminist mentality that resents male success.”
The California megachurch pastor declared:
The fact that the scientific community doesn’t rise up and protest the false science of global warming means they’ve been politicized and post modernized and there’s a crack in the scientific door and pernicious garbage is squeezing through…
This is all political [and] financial agendas, class warfare, class envy … By the way, US$100 billion has been spent to make a case for global warming … driven by the socialist mentality … even some of the feminist mentality that resents male success.
MacArthur began his sermon by comparing the idea of global warming and the idea of extraterrestrials, noting:
The idea of global warming ranks with the idea of extraterrestrials for which there’s not one shred of evidence
Writing about the sermon for The Conversation, Paul Braterman, Hon. Research Fellow; Professor Emeritus in Chemistry, University of Glasgow; dismantles MacArthur’s pseudo-scientific reasoning, and opines:
For me, as a man of science, it is the most complete compilation of unsound arguments, factual errors and misleading analogies as I have seen in discussions of this subject.
He (MacArthur) regards the infallibility of the Bible, from Genesis to Revelation, as essential to his faith, and his sermon about global warming can only be understood in that context. MacArthur’s rejection of the science is shared by other major US ministries and organisations such as Answers in Genesis, Creation Ministries International and the Discovery Institute.
Bottom line: California megachurch Pastor John MacArthur rejects the science behind climate change theory, while arguing that the Earth is a “disposable planet.”
